Spaced Repetition — Learn Vocabulary Effectively

Spaced repetition is one of the most scientifically well-supported methods for language learning. It is based on a simple insight: we forget information in a predictable pattern, and by reviewing material just before we are about to forget it, we can make our memory dramatically more efficient. For German learners preparing for an exam, it is the single most effective way to build vocabulary.

The Science Behind Spaced Repetition

The 'forgetting curve', discovered by Hermann Ebbinghaus in the 1880s, shows that we forget newly learned information rapidly — about 50% within an hour, and about 80% within a week — unless we review it. Each review resets the clock and extends how long we retain the information.

  • Without review: most new vocabulary is forgotten within 24–48 hours
  • After one review: retention extends to about a week
  • After multiple spaced reviews: information moves into long-term memory
  • The spacing effect: longer gaps between reviews are more effective than short gaps
  • SRS (Spaced Repetition Software) calculates the optimal review time for each item individually

The Best SRS Apps for German

Several excellent apps and tools implement spaced repetition. Each has different strengths depending on your learning style and goal.

  • Anki (free, desktop and mobile): the most powerful and flexible SRS tool; use pre-made German decks or create your own
  • Quizlet (free/paid): easier to use than Anki; good for beginners; includes image and audio options
  • Duolingo (free): uses a form of spaced repetition; good for habit-building but less rigorous than Anki
  • Babbel (paid): structured German courses with SRS vocabulary review built in
  • ANKI decks specifically for German exams: search for 'Goethe B1 Wortliste' or 'telc B2 Vokabeln' on AnkiWeb

Tipp: Anki is free and extremely powerful, but it has a learning curve. Spend 30 minutes watching an introductory tutorial before you start — it will pay off enormously.

How to Use Flashcards Correctly

Spaced repetition only works if you use it consistently and correctly. Most beginners make the same avoidable mistakes.

  • Always add example sentences, not just isolated words — context doubles retention
  • Add audio if possible — hearing the correct pronunciation reinforces the word
  • Do your reviews every day — skipping days causes your review pile to explode
  • Never skip a card you find difficult — the algorithm needs your honest ratings
  • Keep individual decks manageable: 10–20 new cards per day is sustainable

SRS for German Exam Preparation

Here is a practical strategy for using spaced repetition specifically for a German language exam.

  • 6–12 weeks before the exam: create or download a deck based on the official vocabulary list for your level
  • Study 15–20 new words daily using Anki; review all due cards every day
  • 4 weeks before the exam: shift focus to exam-specific vocabulary and phrase patterns
  • Final 2 weeks: zero new cards — review only; use freed-up time for practice tests
  • The day before: light review only — rest is more important than cramming at this stage

Tipp: The most important rule of spaced repetition: do your reviews every single day, without exception. Even 10 minutes on a busy day is infinitely better than a full hour after a week's break.
